Why the Seraphite Travelers Were Killed in The Last of Us Season 2

Published on

In The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 3, we meet a group of travelers walking through the forest, but unfortunately, things don’t end well for them. If you’ve played The Last of Us Part 2 game, you might have spotted that these travelers are part of a group called the Seraphites, and let’s just say, being a Seraphite in this world is basically like wearing a big flashing sign that says, “Please attack me!”

So, who are these people, and why are they important? Well, the Seraphites are a religious group who believe in living the old-school way, no fancy gadgets, no technology, just bows, arrows, hammers, and a whole lot of creepy whistling. Yep, they actually communicate with different types of whistles. It’s like a horror movie version of a birdwatcher’s paradise.

In the show, we see a man and a young girl named Constance talking while they move through the forest. It’s clear from their conversation that they’re running from something bad. When Constance asks why they are leaving home, the man explains that they need “distance” to stay safe, and not just distance from their old village, but distance from war. Constance also asks nervously if “demons” are coming, but the man says it’s actually the “Wolves” they need to fear.

Now, before you imagine a bunch of scary wild animals, in The Last of Us world, “Wolves” is just another name for the W.L.F. (Washington Liberation Front). This group is more like a tough army with guns, vehicles, and a very grumpy attitude. They’re not actual wolves, though a few of them probably could have used a bath.

Later on, Ellie and Dina happen to walk down the same path and find the bodies of the Seraphites. Sadly, the travelers didn’t make it. The W.L.F. probably caught up with them and made sure of that. It’s a rough reminder that in this world, if the infected don’t get you, some angry humans probably will. It’s like the world’s worst vacation spot.

But what’s up with all the scars and weird symbols these Seraphites have? If you looked closely, you might have seen that each member had curved scars carved into their cheeks. This isn’t just a bad case of scratching themselves in their sleep. It’s a special ritual for them. When Seraphites grow up, they get these scars during a ceremony to show they’re part of the group and to remind them that people aren’t perfect. Sort of like a really painful version of getting a team T-shirt.

They also have a funny-looking symbol they draw everywhere, two curvy lines with a straight line through the middle. It doesn’t come from any real history books; it’s just something they made up to represent their beliefs. If you see that symbol somewhere, it’s usually a sign that Seraphites are nearby… or were nearby before someone else came along and ruined their day.

In one part of the episode, the young girl Constance asks why the Prophet isn’t helping them. This Prophet was basically the founder of the Seraphite way of life. But there’s a catch: she’s been dead for about 10 years. Talk about disappointing customer service! Even though she’s long gone, her teachings still guide the group. They believe she saw the truth about the world that people needed to go back to simple living, no machines, no tech, just good old-fashioned surviving with sticks and stones.

In the game, players never actually meet this Prophet, but you hear a lot about her. She’s kind of like the mysterious founder of a secret club. You know she exists, people talk about her all the time, but she’s never around for the actual drama. It turns out the W.L.F. were the ones who killed her years ago, which made the fight between the Wolves and the Seraphites even worse. Imagine if two rival school clubs hated each other and one side took out the other’s leader, things would get messy fast.

Since HBO loves to add extra layers and backstories that weren’t fully explored in the game (like what they did with Bill and Frank in Season 1), there’s a good chance we might learn more about this mysterious Prophet in future episodes. Maybe she’ll even get a flashback scene or two, anything’s possible in a world full of zombies, whistling warriors, and super-angry soldiers.

So, in short, the travelers we met were Seraphites, running away from a war, trying to stay safe. Unfortunately, they crossed paths with the Wolves, and, well, it didn’t end well. Just another normal, super-dangerous day in The Last of Us universe.
