Robert Downey Jr Is Back but Not the Way You Think in Avengers Doomsday

Published on

So, back in March 2025, Marvel Studios decided to release some seriously crazy news. They announced that they are making another Avengers movie called Avengers: Doomsday. And it is not just the usual Avengers we know and love. They are bringing back a whole army of Marvel characters.

Some of them are from the newer movies, and some are old-school legends that even your older brother or dad might remember. It is going to be a full-on superhero overload, and honestly, it sounds awesome.

Now, you know how Marvel is usually super secret about everything? Like, they will not even tell you what kind of pizza the characters are eating on set? Well, somehow, a little secret still slipped out.

Anthony Mackie, who now plays Captain America (you know, the guy with the wings and the shield), was doing an interview with Collider. Everything was fine, he was just talking about how excited he is about the movie, and then boom he let something big slip. He said that Avengers: Doomsday is going to end with a huge cliffhanger.

And not just any cliffhanger. He made it sound like one of those jaw-dropping, wide-eyed, “wait, WHAT just happened?” moments. You know the feeling when you are watching a movie and it cuts to black right before the best part, and you just sit there yelling at the screen? Yeah, it is going to be one of those endings.

Anthony said this cliffhanger is super important because it sets up the future of the Marvel world. So basically, whatever happens at the end of this movie is going to decide what all the next movies will be about. He sounded really excited about it, which probably means something huge is coming that we are not ready for.

But wait, that is not all he said. He also warned that in this movie, “no one is safe.” Like, literally nobody. He said that every character is expendable. That means that just because a superhero is popular or has been around forever, it does not mean they are safe this time. Anybody could get hurt. Anybody could… well, you know… not make it to the next movie.

If you thought Infinity War was emotional, just wait. It sounds like Doomsday might leave fans even more shocked.

And now for the part that makes things crazy. Robert Downey Jr. is coming back. Yes, Iron Man himself. But get this, he is not coming back as Tony Stark the hero. He is coming back as the bad guy, Doctor Doom. Yep, you heard that right. Iron Man is now the villain.

Anthony Mackie even joked that he wants “first dibs” on fighting Robert Downey Jr. in the movie. I mean, imagine having to punch your old friend in the face because he turned evil. That has to feel weird, even if it is just acting.

Anyway, what this probably means is that in Avengers: Doomsday, Doctor Doom is going to be a serious problem. Some set videos have already leaked online, and they show giant explosions, cities getting wrecked, and lots of action. So Doom is not here to mess around. He is going to break stuff, and a lot of it.

And poor Sam Wilson, Anthony Mackie’s character, has to deal with all of it. Not only is he trying to keep the Avengers together, but now he has to team up with groups like the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and the Thunderbolts too. It is like he got promoted from being the captain of one team to being the coach of five different teams all at once. Good luck, Cap.

As of right now, they are still filming the movie. That means it will be a long time before we get a real trailer or a full story reveal. But knowing that there is a huge cliffhanger coming has everyone super curious and super nervous.

Fans are already making wild guesses about what could happen. Will Doom win? Will the Avengers lose? Will we have to wait another two years just to find out how it ends? Honestly, all three could be true.

What we do know for sure is that Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on May 1, 2026. So you might want to start preparing yourself now. Stock up on popcorn, tissues, and maybe even a stress ball because this movie sounds like it is going to be a wild, emotional rollercoaster.

And remember, in Marvel movies, anything can happen. Especially when even the good guys are not safe anymore.
