Apple has received its first penalty under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), aimed at enforcing fair rules for big tech.

This historic fine marks the EU’s commitment to strict rules that create fairer competition, especially for companies like Apple that hold dominant positions in app stores, search, and social media.

The penalty follows investigations into Apple’s app policies, which critics say limit third-party developers. Apple has faced accusations of restricting developers in its App Store, a move that the EU claims limits consumer choice.

This penalty aims to set a precedent, showing that the EU will enforce rules under the DMA to prevent tech giants from unfairly controlling the digital market.

In addition to this recent penalty, Apple could face even more fines for not allowing third-party developers the freedom to direct users to alternative payment options outside its App Store.

The EU’s competition head, Margrethe Vestager, has urged Apple to allow more open access in its ecosystem, such as enabling third-party payment services alongside Apple Pay. If repeated offenses continue, Apple could face a penalty of up to 20% of its global revenue.

Recently, Indonesia also placed restrictions on Apple, banning iPhone 16 sales. The reason? Apple failed to meet local investment requirements, leading the government to warn citizens not to buy these devices from abroad.

This shows how governments, like the EU, are increasingly holding tech companies accountable.
