Salman Khan Personality Rights Case Moves Delhi High Court for Urgent Protection

Published on

Bollywood actor Salman Khan has invoked the Salman Khan Personality Rights doctrine before the Delhi High Court, seeking immediate protection of his identity and persona from unauthorised commercial exploitation.

The plea has been placed before the Bench of Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, who is slated to hear the matter on December 11.

Petition Seeks Restraint on Misuse of Salman Khan’s Personality Rights

Khan’s suit, filed through advocates Parag H Khandhar and Chandrima Mitra of DSK Legal, urges the Court to issue directions against several identified and unidentified parties, including John Doe defendants, who are allegedly misusing or attempting to misuse his name, likeness, image, voice and other personality attributes for commercial gain without consent.

The petition asserts that such unauthorised use severely undermines the actor’s proprietary and dignitary interests, compelling judicial intervention to safeguard the Salman Khan Personality Rights from dilution, impersonation or monetisation by third parties.

Growing Trend of Celebrities Approaching Courts

In recent months, multiple public figures have moved courts seeking recognition and enforcement of their personality rights. The Delhi High Court has previously extended protection to veterans such as Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Karan Johar, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Jaggi Vasudev, among others.

Khan’s plea continues the pattern of celebrities increasingly turning to judicial forums to curb misuse of their identity in advertisements, merchandise, AI-generated content, domain names and other digital mediums.

Hearing Scheduled for December 11

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora will consider the actor’s urgent prayers for injunctions on Thursday, December 11, where issues surrounding online impersonation, commercial misappropriation and digital exploitation of the Salman Khan Personality Rights are expected to be argued.

The outcome of the upcoming proceedings may influence ongoing legal discourse regarding personality rights in India, especially in the context of technological misuse and AI-driven replication of celebrity attributes.
