Juan Soto’s stunning three-run homer in the 10th inning helped the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 in Game 5 of the ALCS, sending them to the World Series for the first time in 15 years.
The Yankees, trailing early, relied on key performances from Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres to pull off the victory.
Stanton, named ALCS MVP, tied the game in the 6th inning with a two-run homer after the Yankees had been shut out by Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee.
Soto then stepped up with two outs in the 10th, hitting a 1-2 fastball deep into right-center, marking his third homer of the series.
Torres, who had two hits, set the tone early but was thrown out at home after trying to score from first on Soto’s double.
Stanton’s blast, combined with strong relief pitching, including Luke Weaver’s two scoreless innings, sealed the Yankees’ victory.
Cleveland had taken an early lead with runs from Bo and Josh Naylor, as well as an RBI single from Steven Kwan.
Stanton Shines as ALCS MVP
Despite a slow start, Stanton became the postseason star for the Yankees. His clutch game-tying home run in the 6th came at a crucial moment.
In the ALCS, he hit four homers with seven RBIs, showcasing why he earned the MVP title.
Guardians’ Strong Effort Falls Short
Cleveland fought hard, holding a 2-0 lead through five innings. Bo Naylor’s RBI double and Steven Kwan’s single highlighted their effort.
The Guardians’ first ALCS appearance since 2016 ended with heartbreak, but manager Stephen Vogt praised his team for their incredible journey this season.
Aaron Boone Reflects on Yankees’ Triumph
Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed his pride in the team’s determination and resilience.
“We’ve been close before, but to finally break through, it feels special,” Boone said. “We’re excited for what’s next.”
Yankees Prepare for the World Series
The Yankees will now head to the World Series, determined to claim their first championship since 2009.
With stars like Soto, Judge, and Stanton leading the way, the team feels confident that this is their year.
