David Sweat’s Troubled Beginnings

David Sweat’s criminal history began early. According to his mother, Pamela Sweat, the family lived in Binghamton, and young Sweat attended Calvin Coolidge Elementary School.

He began displaying troubling behavior by age 9, becoming verbally abusive and causing significant distress to his family. By the time he was 17, Sweat was already facing felony charges.

In 1997, at just 17, Sweat received a sentence of two to four years for attempted burglary. He and a friend plotted to steal cash and computers from a youth-group home in Binghamton, intending to tie up a woman and lock her in a storage room.

Although this plan didn’t succeed, it revealed Sweat’s meticulously planned crime pattern.

The Crime That Led to Life Imprisonment

David Sweat’s criminal activities escalated drastically in 2002. At 22, he and his cousin, Jeffrey Nabinger Jr., committed an armed robbery at a fireworks and gun shop in Great Bend, Pennsylvania.

As they transferred the stolen weapons at Grange Hall Park in Kirkwood, Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Tarsia noticed the suspicious activity.

When Tarsia approached the scene, Sweat and Nabinger responded violently. They shot the deputy multiple times, including firing two shots at point-blank range into his head.

In a final act of brutality, Sweat ran over Deputy Tarsia with their vehicle, killing him instantly. Both were arrested three days later after a tip led the police to them.

To avoid the death penalty, Sweat pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The Infamous Escape at Dannemora

While serving his life sentence at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, Sweat crossed paths with fellow inmate Richard Matt, a convicted murderer.

The two planned a daring escape with the help of Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell, a prison employee who smuggled in supplies. On an early June day in 2015, the pair successfully broke out of the maximum-security prison.

The escape triggered a massive three-week manhunt in the Adirondacks. The tension gripped the nation, with law enforcement officials hunting the escapees tirelessly. Matt was eventually shot and killed by police.
