President Donald Trump has decided to stop former President Joe Biden from getting access to secret government information.
This step breaks the usual practice in America where past presidents are allowed to stay updated on classified matters even after leaving office.
Trump explained his choice by reminding everyone that Biden had done something similar to him back in 2021.
That year, Biden had stopped Trump from seeing national security updates, saying Trump’s unpredictable actions after the January 6 Capitol attack made it risky.
At the time, Biden’s team felt it wasn’t safe for Trump to know sensitive details, though officials said Trump could still ask for information if needed.
Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump said Biden’s access would end right away. He argued there’s no reason for Biden to keep getting these briefings.
The White House hasn’t said anything about this yet, and it’s unclear when Biden last got a classified update.
Trump also brought up a report by a former investigator, Robert Hur, who looked into how Biden handled secret documents.
The report called Biden an elderly man with memory troubles and said he shouldn’t face charges for keeping classified papers.
Trump used this to say someone with a weak memory shouldn’t be trusted with the country’s secrets.
For years, ex-presidents in the U.S. have been given access to classified briefings so they can stay informed and sometimes help the current president with advice.
But Trump’s decision changes all that. Interestingly, Biden himself wasn’t sure about letting Trump have briefings after he left office.
Still, when Trump became the Republican candidate for the 2024 election, he got access again as part of the usual process, though he later said he didn’t take those briefings, fearing he’d be blamed for leaks.
Both leaders have had their share of trouble over classified documents. Trump made history as the first ex-president to face federal charges for allegedly holding onto secret files at his Mar-a-Lago home.
Prosecutors said he blocked efforts to get those papers back and even shared them with people who weren’t supposed to see them. But after Trump won the presidency again in 2025, a judge threw out the case, and the charges were dropped.
Biden, too, got into hot water for keeping classified files from his vice president days at his Delaware house and a private office.
Investigators found he kept those papers on purpose, but they didn’t press charges, partly because of his age and memory issues. Biden’s team hit back, saying the report used unfair words about him.
Biden and his advisors haven’t reacted yet, but as Trump settles into his second term, people are watching to see if more such bold moves are on the way.
