Steven Tyler, the iconic lead singer of Aerosmith, made a rare public appearance this past week in Beverly Hills.
The 76-year-old rocker was seen walking through a parking garage, dressed in his signature eclectic style, wearing denim jeans, a fur scarf, a black coat, and eye-catching blue and green trainers.
Adding to his usual array of accessories, he sported multiple chunky rings on his fingers. However, what stood out most was an ice pack he held against his jaw, raising concerns about his ongoing health issues.
Tyler, known for his distinctive four-octave voice and flamboyant persona, stepped away from performing earlier this year after struggling to recover from a severe vocal cord injury sustained in late 2023.
This injury marked a turning point for Aerosmith, forcing the legendary band to announce their retirement from touring after more than five decades of rocking the world.
Aerosmith’s Final Bow: “Peace Out: The Farewell Tour”
The announcement of Aerosmith’s retirement came as a shock to their devoted fans, often referred to as the Blue Army.
The decision followed Tyler’s vocal cord damage during what became their final concert at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, in September 2023.
Reports indicated that the injury was more severe than initially thought, resulting in bleeding and a fractured larynx.
Despite months of intensive treatment from some of the world’s best medical professionals, Tyler struggled to regain his vocal strength. In August 2024, Aerosmith released a heartfelt statement, saying:
“Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery is not possible. We’ve made the heartbreaking and difficult decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”
The “Peace Out: The Farewell Tour”, initially launched in September 2023, was intended to celebrate the band’s legendary career.
Unfortunately, many shows were rescheduled and later canceled due to Tyler’s condition. Aerosmith thanked their fans for over 50 years of unwavering support, acknowledging the role their audience played in cementing the band’s legacy as one of the greatest in rock history.
Steven Tyler’s Health Battles
Tyler’s vocal cord injury proved to be more than a temporary setback. Along with the damage, he fractured his larynx, which required ongoing treatment and an extended recovery period. Doctors emphasized the need for patience, but the severity of the injury made a full recovery impossible.
In his own message to fans, Tyler expressed his heartbreak at having to step away from performing:
“I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers, and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world. I promise we will be back in some way, as soon as we can!”
The band’s line-up, which remained largely unchanged over the years, included Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, and Brad Whitford.
Together, they delivered timeless hits such as “Cryin’,” “Livin’ on the Edge,” and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” making history as one of the most successful rock bands of all time.
Rare Public Appearance Raises Questions
Tyler’s sighting in Beverly Hills marked his first public appearance since Aerosmith’s retirement announcement. While fans were delighted to see him, the ice pack on his jaw drew attention to his ongoing health struggles.
The rock legend appeared calm and fashionable, but his condition remains a concern for his loyal supporters.
This appearance comes ahead of Tyler’s participation in the sixth annual “Jam for Janie”, a Grammy Awards viewing party scheduled for February 2, 2025, at the Hollywood Palladium.
Hosted by comedian Tiffany Haddish, the event will benefit Tyler’s charity, Janie’s Fund, which provides critical support and resources for young women who have experienced abuse and neglect.
Janie’s Fund
Despite stepping away from the stage, Tyler remains committed to his philanthropic efforts. Janie’s Fund, founded in 2015, has become a significant part of Tyler’s legacy, helping countless young women overcome trauma and build brighter futures.
The Grammy Awards viewing party is expected to draw high-profile attendees, with ticket prices ranging from $3,000 to $100,000.
All proceeds will go directly to the charity, reinforcing Tyler’s dedication to making a difference even as he navigates his personal health challenges.
