Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients in Ohio may receive two payments in November due to a calendar quirk.
The second SSI payment on Nov. 29 replaces the December payment, leaving SSI recipients with no check in December. This isn’t the first time this has happened—Ohioans experienced the same situation in August.
SSI benefits help people with limited income or resources, such as those over 65, disabled, or blind. As Ohioans rely on these payments, they may need to adjust their budgets, especially during the holiday season.
Why are SSI recipients getting two checks in November?
SSI payments usually come on the 1st of each month, but when the 1st falls on a weekend, the payment is sent earlier.
Since Dec. 1 is a Sunday, SSI beneficiaries will get their December payment on Nov. 29. Ohioans receiving both Social Security and SSI will get three checks in November but must plan for no SSI payment in December.
This pattern will repeat in 2025, with two payments in May and none in June.
Social Security COLA increase for 2025
A 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is expected for Social Security benefits in 2025. This would raise the average monthly benefit of $1,920 by about $48.
The COLA helps Ohioans, including retired workers and others, cope with inflation. Social Security benefits in Ohio total $4.23 billion each month, impacting nearly 2.5 million Ohioans.
How much do Ohioans get from Social Security?
Ohio residents who receive Social Security and SSI include retirees, disabled workers, and widows. In 2023, these groups received $4.23 billion in benefits each month.
With the upcoming COLA increase, this amount could rise by $84.6 million each month, totaling over $1 billion in additional payments for 2025.
November Social Security payment schedule
Regular Social Security benefits for November will follow this schedule:
- Nov. 13: Birthdays from the 1st to the 10th of the month.
- Nov. 20: Birthdays from the 11th to the 20th.
- Nov. 27: Birthdays from the 21st to the 31st.
Social Security recipients can use this schedule to better plan their finances, especially with the holiday season approaching.
What to expect in 2025 for SSI payments
Calendar quirks will continue in 2025. Ohioans will get their January payment on Dec. 31, 2024, and their February payment on Jan. 31, 2025.
However, no SSI payments will be sent out in March, and two payments will be issued in May, followed by none in June.
SSI recipients in Ohio must keep track of these irregularities to avoid financial surprises.
