Tali Shapiro’s Escape

In 1968, 8-year-old Tali Shapiro was walking to school when Alcala lured her into his car, claiming to know her parents.

He took her to his apartment, where he raped and brutally beat her. Police, following a tip from a concerned bystander, arrived just in time to save her life.

Shapiro was unconscious, beaten, and on the brink of death, but she miraculously survived after spending months in recovery.

Despite her harrowing ordeal, Shapiro chose not to testify during Alcala’s first trial, and he received only a short sentence.

Shapiro now lives in Palm Springs, California, and has moved past the trauma that Alcala inflicted on her.

She testified against him in 2010, never once acknowledging his presence in the courtroom. When Alcala died in 2021, Shapiro said the world was better off without him.

Morgan Rowan’s Survival

Morgan Rowan was just 16 when Alcala assaulted her. They first met in 1965, and Alcala attacked her in a horrifying manner three years later.

After luring her into his house under the pretense of a party, he assaulted and raped her. Rowan’s life was saved by friends who broke into the room during the attack.

She escaped, traumatized and deeply scarred by the experience.

Rowan later suffered guilt when she learned about Alcala’s other crimes, especially the attack on Tali Shapiro, but found solace when she reached out to Shapiro years later.

The two became close friends and now live just a few hours apart in California, maintaining a strong bond of sisterhood.

She wants to help young girls avoid the dangers she faced by sharing her story. Despite Alcala’s death, she admits that the trauma sometimes lingers, though she remains determined not to let it control her life.
