Apple’s latest iPad mini 2024 release, powered by the A17 Pro chip, offers a faster, sleek tablet that continues the small-size appeal Apple fans adore.
However, despite the performance boost, it’s unclear how many meaningful improvements are here for those who already have the older model.
With a vibrant 8.3-inch screen and compatibility with the Apple Pencil Pro, Apple’s newest mini tablet might appeal to casual artists and tech enthusiasts, but is it worth the price?
For $500 on Wi-Fi and $649 for cellular, Apple keeps the price tag high but thankfully ups storage to 128GB from the previous 64GB. However, those looking for significant changes beyond speed might be left wanting.
Small Yet Limited
Even though it’s great for e-reading or light video watching, the iPad mini’s small display size may not suit everyone.
The LCD screen quality has not improved, which means lower brightness, so outdoors or in brightly lit rooms, it still requires maximum brightness just to be comfortably readable.
Those needing a tablet for creative work or detailed tasks may not find this a practical choice. Users must also buy an external keyboard, as Apple has yet to offer an official one for the mini, limiting its usefulness as a work device.
Creative Potential, Limited By Screen
The 8.3-inch screen size and LCD panel limit its potential for serious drawing or sketching, even though the Apple Pencil Pro features have been upgraded.
Although creative software like LumaFusion is compatible, its small display makes prolonged creative work a challenge.
Sketching or light design work may be feasible, but anything intensive requires a bigger screen, such as the iPad Air or Pro.
Battery and Apple Intelligence
The battery life doesn’t appear to offer much improvement either, as users report needing maximum brightness frequently, which can quickly drain the power.
As for Apple Intelligence, which includes voice transcription and notifications, these features offer potential but aren’t enough to justify an upgrade.
Audience Appeal
Despite its limitations, the iPad mini has a dedicated fanbase. Its size, portability, and modest abilities make it useful for casual purposes.
However, for those already owning the 2021 iPad mini, the 2024 update might not deliver enough to justify the switch.
