Bryan C. Hartnell is known as the only survivor of the Zodiac Killer’s brutal attacks. The encounter with the infamous serial killer took place on September 29th, 1969, when Hartnell was picnicking with Cecelia Ann Shepard by Lake Berryessa in Napa County.

According to zodiacciphers.com, a man had been spying on them from behind the trees. When the stranger approached, he put on a black executioner hood and wore a bib with a symbol.

The man told Hartnell that he was an escaped convict and demanded money and their car keys.

The encounter turned violent when the hooded attacker tied up both Hartnell and Shepard. The assailant then stabbed Bryan Hartnell six times in the back and Cecelia ten times.

Though gravely injured, Hartnell managed to pretend he was dead and survived the horrific ordeal.

After the attacker left, he crawled to the roadside and alerted help. Tragically, Cecelia Ann Shepard succumbed to her injuries the next day.

Bryan Hartnell’s Attempt To Describe The Zodiac Killer

From his hospital bed, Bryan C. Hartnell described his attacker as a man with brown hair, weighing between 225 and 250 pounds, and standing around 5’8″ to 5’10” in height.

Hartnell also noticed the attacker’s hair hanging through the eyeholes of his hood. Despite his efforts, Hartnell’s description conflicted with the appearance of the chief Zodiac suspect, Arthur Leigh Allen.

Allen was much taller and balding, adding layers of mystery to the unsolved case. Before leaving, the killer left a chilling note on Hartnell’s car door, listing dates and methods of previous attacks.

Hartnell’s Role In David Fincher’s “Zodiac”

Over the years, Bryan Hartnell’s life took a different turn. After surviving the attack, he gave several press interviews, gaining local fame.

However, he stepped into the spotlight again in 2007 when David Fincher, director of Zodiac, enlisted his help as a consultant for the movie. Hartnell even managed to secure a brief cameo in the film.

He appears at the one hour 36 minutes and 28-second mark, during a heated conversation scene on the stairs. Hartnell continued to share his story in later projects, such as Case Reopened (1999) and Buzzfeed Unsolved: True Crime (2016).

Bryan C. Hartnell’s Life Today

In the decades following the attack, Hartnell opted to keep a low profile. He pursued a career in law and now resides in Redlands, California, with his wife Monica.

Together, they have two children, Benjamin and Jonathan. Today, Bryan C. Hartnell operates a law firm called Hartnell, Lister, and Moore, which specializes in civil cases.

Despite being a key figure in the Zodiac case, Hartnell’s description of the killer never pointed towards Arthur Leigh Allen, leaving the mystery of the Zodiac Killer unresolved.

The Netflix documentary series This Is The Zodiac Speaking presents new evidence linking Allen to all known Zodiac crime scenes, even three additional unsolved murders. Yet, discrepancies in the descriptions continue to cloud Allen’s identification as the Zodiac.
