Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, was reportedly ready to leave the club this summer.

Fernandes, who has been a key figure for manager Erik ten Hag, felt his salary didn’t match some of the club’s top earners like Marcus Rashford.

Even though his contract ran until 2026, he was considering a move due to the club’s struggles in achieving top-level success, like competing for the Premier League title and consistently playing in the Champions League.

In an interview, Fernandes expressed his frustration, saying, “I don’t want to leave. This has always been my ultimate dream. I just want my expectations to fit with the expectations of the club.”

He added that fans feel the same, wanting to compete at the highest levels and fight for trophies. The Portuguese star hinted that, without signs of improvement, he might be forced to move on.

A new report from ESPN revealed that Manchester United and Fernandes were closer to parting ways than people thought.

Two sources mentioned that Fernandes was ready to leave this past summer. However, Ineos, a new investor in the club, intervened, offering him a significant salary increase.

The higher wages were enough to convince him to stay, leading to a contract extension until 2027.

After signing the deal in August, Fernandes said he was excited about the club’s future.

“It’s clear from my talks with the football leadership and manager how determined everyone is to fight for trophies. I can see how positive the future is, and I am excited to lead the team forward,” he said.

This contract renewal was a huge relief for United, as losing their captain and playmaker would have been a significant blow.

Bruno Fernandes will continue to be a critical part of United’s push for success in the coming years.
