Philadelphia Police ramped up patrols across the city Wednesday night in response to social media posts suggesting looting and disturbances.
Officers were deployed citywide, especially near Center City businesses and other previously affected neighborhoods, aiming to prevent any unrest.
Heightened Patrols After Election Day
Following Election Day, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel stressed the importance of protecting Philadelphia communities. “We’re being very, very cautious to ensure safety,” Bethel said. With a robust plan in place, the department is prepared for any response to election outcomes.
In high-traffic spots like the 52nd Street corridor in West Philadelphia, officers increased their visibility, including bike and patrol units. Numerous businesses in areas like Market, Walnut, and Chestnut Streets closed early or boarded up windows for added protection.
Around 8:30 p.m., police dispersed a group of juveniles dressed in black gathered on Market Street. Officers detained two individuals during the incident. Another group attempted to break into a DTLR store on Germantown Avenue but was stopped by police.
Police Monitor Social Media and Prioritize Safety
Philadelphia Police are actively tracking social media, sharing intelligence with partner agencies to stay ahead of potential disturbances.
Sgt. Eric Gripp highlighted, “Criminal behavior will not be tolerated, and our officers are prepared to act to protect businesses and neighborhoods.”
Peaceful Protests Near City Hall
While focused on preventing disruptions, police also managed peaceful protests near City Hall. Groups like the Socialist Alternative and Revolutionary Communists of America gathered to protest former President Trump’s policies.
Demonstrator Eric Jenkins expressed, “We’re here to start a mass movement against Trump’s right-wing agenda.” Officers maintained a close watch to ensure demonstrations stayed peaceful.
