A tragic incident shook the Sikh community and Halifax residents when a 19-year-old teen, Gursimran Kaur, was discovered dead inside a walk-in oven at a Walmart store where she worked alongside her mother.
This heartbreaking event has led to an outpouring of support and condolences, especially from the Sikh community in Canada.
According to police, they responded to an emergency call at the Halifax Walmart store on Saturday night. Upon arrival, they found Gursimran Kaur in the bakery’s walk-in oven.
While the authorities have not yet released her name, a GoFundMe organized by the Maritime Sikh Society identified her as Gursimran Kaur.
Kaur and her mother reportedly moved to Canada from India two years ago, with both working at the same Walmart location.
Sikh Community Rallies to Support the Family
The Sikh community in Halifax, led by the Maritime Sikh Society, has shown immense solidarity in this dark time.
They organized a fundraiser on GoFundMe, which received overwhelming support, raising nearly $200,000 Canadian dollars before the organizers closed it on Friday.
The funds will help Kaur’s family during this unimaginable period, covering essential expenses such as travel arrangements for her father and brother, who are still in India.

Sikh leaders expressed their sorrow on the GoFundMe page, describing the family’s grief as “unimaginable and indescribable.” They shared the sequence of events that led Kaur’s mother to search for her, which ended in the harrowing discovery of her daughter.
The leaders thanked everyone who contributed to support the family, stating that the outpouring of kindness and generosity has been a significant source of strength for them.
Investigation Underway, Walmart Remains Closed
Halifax police are continuing their investigation into the cause and manner of Gursimran Kaur’s death, which they described as a “complex case” involving several partner agencies.
The authorities have not released further updates and noted that investigations of this nature could take significant time.
Walmart’s spokesperson, Amanda Moss, confirmed that the Halifax location remains closed until further notice. The Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills, and Immigration has issued a stop-work order for the bakery department and specific equipment involved.
Moss conveyed Walmart’s deepest condolences and affirmed that the company’s focus remains on supporting the associates during this difficult period.
