Katie Santry, a self-proclaimed “crime junkie” from Columbus, Ohio, is at the center of a viral mystery after discovering a rolled-up rug buried in her backyard.

The unusual find has prompted a police investigation and captured the attention of true crime enthusiasts online, with many speculating that it could contain a dead body.

Santry, 34, and her boyfriend made the eerie discovery while digging up their yard to build a fence.

They stumbled upon the shag carpet more than two feet underground, under a Bloodgood tree. “Is there a dead body in that rug? Or is it the ghost of the rug’s past?” Santry joked in a TikTok video, which quickly garnered millions of views.

Her home had already been the site of strange occurrences, including a broken laptop and mysterious noises.

The TikTok community reacted with a mix of horror and curiosity, with commenters divided between believing the rug might hide a body or simply being a leftover piece of junk.

Santry humorously noted that many people go missing in Columbus, further fueling speculation.

“The Internet is about 50/50 on whether it’s a dead body or an animal, and maybe 10 percent think this was just a junkyard,” she shared.

After much online debate and pressure from her followers, Santry decided to contact the police. She explained her concerns, saying, “I said, ‘Hey, this could be the dumbest call you get today, but there’s a rug in the ground.’”

When officers arrived, they were intrigued but stated they did not have the resources to dig it up. Instead, they advised Santry to call them back if she uncovered anything unusual.

Santry sought help to dig up the carpet but found it too packed down. The police later returned with homicide detectives and cadaver dogs, who alerted the team by sitting near the rug’s location, indicating a potential human presence.

This prompted law enforcement to tape off the area and conduct further investigations.

Santry’s search for answers led her to contact the former owners of the house. The daughter of a previous resident was equally puzzled about why a rug would be buried in the yard.

As of now, the investigation continues, and Santry remains fascinated by the entire experience. “I truly don’t think there’s a dead body down there,” she remarked, but the curiosity about the rug’s origin continues to haunt her.

The Columbus Police Department has confirmed that there are currently no conclusive findings.
