Why Jan Killed Tim Kono?

Jan Bellows, played by Amy Ryan, is introduced as a talented musician living in the Arconia. She has a hidden romantic history with Tim Kono (Julian Cihi), the murder victim.

Their relationship was brief and secret, but it had devastating consequences. After Tim broke up with Jan due to her controlling nature, her unstable mental state took a dark turn.

Jan’s possessiveness and emotional instability drove her to carefully plan Tim’s murder. She used poison to slowly take Tim’s life, making it seem like a natural death.

Once the poison began to affect Tim, Jan followed him to his apartment and gruesomely finished the job by shooting him. This final act was meant to stage his death as a suicide.

How Charles, Mabel, & Oliver Caught Jan

Despite her sinister plot, Jan’s plan is revealed due to the relentless investigation led by Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver (Martin Short).

Initially, Charles, who is romantically involved with Jan, refuses to believe she could be the killer. This emotional attachment clouds his judgment, but Mabel and Oliver’s suspicions push him to reconsider.

Charles records Jan’s confession after she poisons him, using the same method she used on Tim.

Although weakened, Charles manages to stay alive long enough to outwit Jan with the help of Mabel and Oliver. Jan is arrested, but she remains a lurking threat, as seen in future seasons.

Jan’s Role in Future Seasons

Though arrested in Season 1, Jan reappears in Only Murders in the Building Season 2, where she aids Charles in his new investigation.

In Season 4, after escaping from prison, Jan once again steps into Charles’s life, this time seeking information about Sazz, who plays an important role in both her and Charles’s lives.

There’s even potential for a redemption arc for Jan, as she could help Charles and his friends catch the new killer in Season 4. With her dangerous nature, however, her return remains both exciting and unpredictable.
