  • Robert Kuok, now 101, remains actively interested in his grandson’s AI data center ventures.

Kuok Meng Wei, grandson of billionaire Robert Kuok, is making waves in Southeast Asia’s tech industry.

As CEO of K2 Strategic, the 41-year-old is spearheading a $10 billion investment in AI-driven data centers across Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

His goal? To turn the Kuok Group into a major player in the region’s booming digital infrastructure sector.

Meng Wei’s latest project, a 60-megawatt (MW) data center at Sedenak Tech Park in Johor, Malaysia, is just the beginning.

Johor, once a quiet Malaysian state, has become a tech hotspot, attracting global giants in cloud computing and AI services.

“The data center industry is the hottest industry we’ve seen in decades,” says Meng Wei, emphasizing the rapid rise in demand for cloud storage and AI computing power.

Rapid Growth and Expansion Plans

Currently, K2 Strategic ranks as the third-largest data center operator in Johor, following Bain Capital’s Bridge Data Centres (126MW) and DayOne, a unit of China’s GDS (115MW).

With ambitious plans to scale operations tenfold to 1,200MW by 2030, Meng Wei is aggressively expanding K2’s footprint beyond Malaysia.

His strategy includes:

  • Acquiring land outside Johor’s Sedenak Tech Park.
  • Partnering with Indonesia’s billionaire Widjaja family’s Sinar Mas Land to develop 100MW capacity in Bekasi, Jakarta.
  • Exploring new sites in Thailand and other Southeast Asian markets.

The data center boom is not just limited to private investors. Tech giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Oracle plan to pour over $44 billion into Southeast Asia’s data infrastructure, with $23 billion allocated for Malaysia alone.

A New Era of Business

The Kuok Group, founded in 1949, built its fortune on commodities like sugar, rice, and flour. Under Robert Kuok’s leadership, it expanded into logistics, shipping, and luxury hospitality, including the iconic Shangri-La Hotels.

Now, the third-generation Kuok entrepreneurs, including Meng Wei and his brother Meng Xiong (who runs the family’s private equity firm K3 Ventures), are steering the business into digital infrastructure.

Despite being a traditional conglomerate, the Kuok Group has had a long-standing interest in tech. Robert Kuok invested in Epsilon Telecommunications in 2003, an early version of modern data centers.

Meng Wei later served as a director at Epsilon before it was sold to Korea Telecom in 2021 for $145 million.

His transition into data centers began in 2016 when he convinced the family to convert a warehouse in Dublin into a high-tech facility.

The project, completed in 2018, made K2 Strategic one of the largest data center operators in Ireland, with 60MW across four centers serving major U.S. tech firms.

Building Data Centers at Lightning Speed

Time is crucial in the data center industry. Unlike traditional construction, which can take two years, Meng Wei is leveraging modular engineering techniques to build data centers much faster.

In 2023, K2 Strategic acquired Singapore-based McPEC, a company specializing in offshore oil-and-gas structures. Now, McPEC is repurposing its modular technology to construct data centers at record speed.

This approach helped complete the Sedenak Tech Park facility in under a year.

“The quicker we deliver data center capacity, the better,” says Fred Fitzalan Howard, a data center expert at Knight Frank in Singapore.

The Sustainability Challenge

AI data centers require enormous amounts of power. According to Goldman Sachs, global data center electricity consumption could rise to 3-4% of total energy use by 2030. In Ireland, data centers already consume 20% of the country’s electricity.

Malaysia is experiencing similar challenges. In July 2024, parts of Klang Valley suffered a major power outage, highlighting the strain on local grids.

To address this, Meng Wei is leading the Kuok Group’s renewable energy initiatives. The company plans to convert 1,000 acres of its Malaysian plantations into solar farms, with the potential to generate 100MW of clean electricity.

“The sustainability angle is very strong for me,” he says. “I’d like to look back and tell my children what I did to make this world a better place.”

The Future of AI Data Centers in Asia

The AI boom is reshaping the global data center industry. Asia-Pacific’s data center capacity grew from 10 gigawatts (GW) in 2020 to 18GW in 2024 and is expected to reach 35GW by 2029.

K2 Strategic’s aggressive expansion aligns perfectly with this trend. With cutting-edge technology, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to sustainability, Kuok Meng Wei is positioning his family business at the forefront of Southeast Asia’s digital transformation.

Even at 101 years old, Robert Kuok remains keenly interested in business. When news of Malaysia’s AI data center investments surfaced, he messaged his grandson, asking, “What’s going on? Give me an update.”

For Meng Wei, this is just the beginning of an even bigger digital revolution.
