A devastating fire broke out in Studio City on the night of January 8, 2025, at a four-story home located on the 3000 block of North Sunswept Drive.

The inferno quickly grew in intensity, rapidly spreading to nearby hillside homes. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the fire was first reported at 8:52 PM, with the residence “well involved in fire with exposures and vegetation.”

The flames caused the structure to collapse, sending a cloud of embers and burning debris down the hillside.

The fire’s swift spread was further fueled by strong winds, which made it difficult for firefighters to control the flames. Adam Vangerpen, a spokesperson for the LAFD, told KTLA around 9:30 p.m. that the fire was producing ember casts that were threatening nearby vegetation and buildings.

“We did just have the winds pick up again, so we are seeing some ember casting from that four-story structure. Our hope is to hit it hard, and we’re trying to keep it out of the brush right now,” Vangerpen explained.

The fire, which started as a single-structure fire, posed a significant threat to neighboring properties. Despite the structure’s collapse, firefighters continued their efforts to contain the flames and protect surrounding areas from further damage.

Several social media users, including locals, shared videos of the four-story home’s collapse, further spreading awareness of the incident. The LAFD quickly reported that there was no connection between this fire and the one burning in the Hollywood Hills at the same time.

Despite the growing danger, emergency teams maintained their focus on defending the nearby structures and brush. With a defensive strategy in place, the LAFD worked tirelessly to control spot fires, ensuring that the blaze didn’t spread further into the dry vegetation of the surrounding hills.

The fire began to draw significant attention as it threatened to extend beyond the affected property. Emergency crews were careful to manage the spreading embers and hot debris, knowing that any sparks in the nearby brush could lead to even more destruction.

“We are trying to contain the fire from jumping to the brush right now,” said Vangerpen, indicating the priority of keeping the flames from jumping to nearby wildland areas that could lead to even more dangerous conditions.

In addition to the structural collapse, several spot fires ignited in the surrounding vegetation, creating additional challenges for firefighters on the ground.

While the fire was not directly connected to the Hollywood Hills fire, the LAFD took immediate action, working to contain the Sunswept Fire. Although the flames were brought under control by late evening, the fire’s proximity to nearby buildings remained a concern.

At around 9:30 p.m., the LAFD issued an advisory on X (formerly known as Twitter) warning residents living near Laurel Canyon, Mulholland Drive, Coldwater Canyon Avenue, and Ventura Boulevard in Studio City to prepare for possible evacuations. The warning urged locals to gather supplies and loved ones in case an evacuation order was issued.

Despite the danger, firefighters succeeded in containing the house fire by late in the evening. However, their work was not over. Several spot fires had ignited in the area, and firefighters continued to battle the flames throughout the night.

As the night wore on, firefighters managed to extinguish the remaining spot fires, and by morning, the situation was under control.

Although the home was lost to the flames, the quick actions of the fire department prevented further widespread destruction.

Residents in the area were urged to remain vigilant, as there were still concerns about potential flare-ups due to the dry conditions and strong winds.

As of 11:00 p.m., there were no confirmed evacuation orders, but officials continued to monitor the situation. The LAFD maintained its defensive posture, working to protect both lives and property from the growing danger posed by the fire.
