After a six-year hiatus, Marvel’s Daredevil is making a highly anticipated comeback in Daredevil: Born Again, premiering on Disney+ on March 4, 2025.
The revival marks the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, promising a gripping, action-packed narrative that delves deep into the dark corners of Hell’s Kitchen.
From Cancellation to Revival
The original Daredevil series aired on Netflix between 2015 and 2018, receiving critical acclaim for its intense storytelling, complex characters, and dark tone. Despite its success, the show was unexpectedly canceled after three seasons.
“Season 3 had been well received, and they’d already gone to work on season 4. Then, just overnight, it went away,” Charlie Cox shared about the abrupt cancellation.
While Cox believed the series was over, Vincent D’Onofrio held on to hope for a revival. D’Onofrio’s optimism bore fruit when both he and Cox reprised their roles—D’Onofrio as Kingpin in Hawkeye (2021) and Cox as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
These appearances signaled Marvel Studios’ intent to bring the characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fully.
Transitioning to Disney+: Retaining the Dark Edge
With the move from Netflix to Disney+, fans wondered whether the reboot would maintain the dark and gritty tone that made the original so beloved. Cox and D’Onofrio worked closely with the creative team to ensure the series stayed true to its roots.
“We really pushed for the show to remain geared towards an older audience and not dumbed down to capture a wider net of people,” Cox explained.
Showrunner Dario Scardapane, who joined the project after Hollywood’s strikes, retooled the series to focus on an action-driven crime story set in New York.
“The real trick was to have the DNA of the old Netflix show but push it forward into something very new,” Scardapane said.
The series is no longer a legal procedural but a darker and grittier story, emphasizing Daredevil’s fight against the criminal underworld.
Improvised Moments and Complex Dynamics
The chemistry between Cox and D’Onofrio extends beyond their roles. A recently revealed teaser clip shows Daredevil and Kingpin sharing a surprising moment of levity in a diner. According to Scardapane, the scene was not part of the original script.
It was a result of Cox and D’Onofrio’s collaboration during rehearsals, where they felt a moment of twisted humor would enhance the tension. “They brought this messed-up levity that became the heart of the scene,” Scardapane shared.
This interplay between Daredevil and Kingpin will continue to drive the narrative. Their complex relationship, rooted in years of enmity, is the emotional core of the story.
Familiar Faces and New Challenges
Daredevil: Born Again will also feature the return of beloved characters like Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), and Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal).
Each character adds depth to Matt Murdock’s journey as he navigates personal and professional challenges while battling formidable foes.
While the series honors the legacy of the Netflix original, it also explores new ground. Scardapane revealed that the show will introduce narratives not previously covered in the comics, offering fans something fresh and unexpected.
